Program Note: Scouting America (National) has retired the Nova/Supernova program. Pack 2 is continuing STEM as a local enrichment track. Recognition is provided by the Pack (stickers/certificates and optional legacy patch/pin while supplies last). Some councils may still offer legacy support; otherwise items are recorded locally rather than in Scoutbook.

Pack 2 keeps hands-on STEM alive as a local enrichment track. Here’s how adults can help safely and consistently.
Program update: Scouting America (National) has retired the Nova/Supernova program. Pack 2 continues STEM locally. If your council still supports the legacy program, you may optionally register in those roles (details below); otherwise, serve as a Pack 2 STEM Helper under the standard BSA youth protection rules.
• Youth Protection (YPT) current; follow two-deep leadership and no one-on-one contact.
• Register as an adult volunteer if you will lead recurring activities or have regular contact with youth.
• Pennsylvania volunteers (18+): state background clearances are required for youth-facing roles.
• Coordinate with leaders: plan age-appropriate activities with the Den Leader/Cubmaster; follow the Guide to Safe Scouting.
• Safety first: eye/hand protection as needed; simple materials; clear instructions and cleanup.
• Any interested adult may serve; YPT required.
• Register as a Nova Counselor (code 58) via an Adult Volunteer Application submitted to the Council Service Center (this is separate from a unit position).
• Work with dens/families on legacy Nova activities; confirm completions per council guidance.
• Recording/insignia availability varies by council; Pack 2 will recognize locally when council recording is not available.
• Background in a STEM field; approval by the Council STEM/advancement committee.
• Register as a Supernova Mentor (code 52) with an Adult Volunteer Application and the Supernova Counselor/Mentor Application.
• YPT current; follow two-deep leadership and no one-on-one contact.
• Guide project planning, safety, and evaluation per council expectations; coordinate with Pack leaders.
